Marmennil
The legend of Marmennil and Anfinnur who was a farmer in Elduvík goes like this: Tradition
says that a beast called Marmennil lives on the bottom of the sea. He
looks human but is smaller than man and has long fingers. Marmennil is
teasing the fishermen by biting of the bait and then fixing the hooks to
the bottom of the sea so their line eventually breaks. Once
Marmennil came to grief though. He was fixing Anfinnur's hook to the
bottom while all of a sudden the hook was fixed deep in his hand. He was
then drawn into the boat. The men in the boat made the sign of the cross
and brought the beast to their home. Hereafter
they always brought with them Marmennil when they went fishing. They had
to remember always to make the sign of the cross on him when he was
onboard. The fishermen could always tell if there was fish in the sea
below, as Marmennil would start to laugh and play in the boat. If they
then through out the gear they would be sure to make a catch. Arnfinnur
had the Marmennil with him for a long time. But one day when they floated
the boat the surf was heavy and they forgot to make the sign of the cross.
As soon as the boat was on the sea Marmennil sneak overboard never to be
seen again. |
